Norway’s National Security Authority Reports Tripling of Successful Cyberattacks

Norway's National Security Authority (NSM) stated on Tuesday that the number of "successful" cyberattacks targeting Norwegian organizations has tripled over the last six months, issuing a warning regarding continued threats to national security. The NSM, which assists in countering espionage and hybrid threats, noted that the country's defense industry and space sector are particularly exposed to cyber risk. The agency also warned that critical infrastructure and service providers vital to national security face heightened danger.

NSM director Arne Christian Haugstøyl stated that the agency is making this assessment public because it is "absolutely necessary to strengthen both the resilience and the ability to handle cyber operations in Norwegian organizations." The report indicated that certain businesses and organizations are increasingly subjected to reconnaissance, ransomware, and DDoS attacks, though the NSM did not attribute these actions to a specific actor. Furthermore, the NSM warned that the rapid growth of artificial intelligence technology poses a "serious risk" to Norwegian businesses and organizations.

Haugstøyl explained that "AI analyzes large amounts of data and identifies vulnerabilities faster than humans have been able to," adding that these vulnerabilities "open up new opportunities for cyberattacks at a faster pace and on a larger scale." He concluded that "the risk is increasing, and the pace at which security measures are implemented must be accelerated."
