Airbnb plans to launch custom AI travel agent in early 2027

Airbnb announced Thursday that it will launch a specialized AI travel agent during the first half of 2027. The company detailed the project in a third-quarter shareholder letter, moving away from previous timelines that suggested a release within the next year.

CEO Brian Chesky told analysts during an earnings call that the company is building a custom-designed, AI-native experience rather than a standard text-heavy chatbot. Chesky argued that general-purpose agents are ill-suited for travel planning because the process is aspirational and involves visual decision-making.

"Travel is aspirational. Discovering where to go and where to stay is part of the experience. In fact, 80% of travelers say they enjoy spending time researching trips," Chesky said. He noted that users want to view photos, compare homes, and make decisions with travel companions, tasks he believes require more than a simple chat interface.

The company plans to use a concept described as "generative UI," where the agent draws from a library of travel-specific components—including maps, photos, comparisons, calendars, and itineraries—to compose a personalized interface in real time. This approach aims to provide the right interface for a user's specific needs rather than relying on traditional text-based responses.

Beyond the initial planning and booking phases, the agent is expected to assist guests throughout their entire trip. According to the company, the tool will be able to handle tasks such as changing reservations, resolving payment issues, managing refunds, rebooking, and providing 24-hour safety support.

Airbnb intends to expand the agent's capabilities over time to include services and experiences alongside homes and hotels. The company stated that its development is informed by nearly 20 years of data regarding how hosts and guests interact on its platform.

The announcement coincided with third-quarter earnings that showed revenue grew 19% to $4.87 billion, exceeding Wall Street estimates. Following these results, Airbnb raised its 2026 revenue growth forecast to the high teens from previous mid-teen projections.
