Sam Altman Claims Elon Musk Seeks to Prevent Concentration of AI Power

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that Elon Musk and former OpenAI cofounders are developing independent AI products because they believe power must not be concentrated in a single individual's hands. Speaking during a podcast with Raj Shamani, Altman suggested that Musk's motivations include a belief that Altman's approach is flawed, leading Musk to seek to prevent power from being centralized. This follows a history of public feuds between the two executives regarding the structure and objectives of OpenAI.

Altman identified two primary risks regarding the development of artificial intelligence. The first involves a total loss of control to AI systems that are significantly more capable than humans, a scenario where control cannot be reclaimed once ceded. The second risk involves a single entity becoming disproportionately powerful relative to others. To mitigate this, Altman argued that it is better for the world to have multiple competing AI efforts utilizing different approaches.

Musk has expressed similar concerns regarding AI risks, including a warning in October against "torturing" super intelligence, which he suggested could lead to an AI system seeking revenge. While Musk has focused on space-based AI satellites through SpaceX, the two leaders have disagreed on the suitability and timing of such technology. Altman noted that the high stakes of AI development lead many individuals to believe they are the only ones capable of building the technology safely.
