DoorDash revealed during its third-quarter earnings call that it has processed only "several hundred" orders originating from third-party AI agents, including those from Muse, Instinct, and Fo. The company stated that, for comparison, it completes an average of 3 million deliveries daily. DoorDash CEO Tony Xu addressed questions regarding the rapid adoption of AI agents, cautioning against overestimation.
Xu stated, "if you look at where AI agents are today, we’re seeing maybe several hundred orders in total from some of these third-party agents." Xu noted that users continue to place orders predominantly through the official DoorDash app, though the company expressed a desire to learn more about agentic use cases and cultivate a relationship with third-party agent developers. The company also indicated a potential future opportunity to advertise within these agents.
DoorDash has launched its own suite of tools, including a text-to-order agent in September, a CLI agent in July, and a chatbot named Ask DoorDash, which launched in June and permits users to place orders using prompts and photos. Furthermore, DoorDash released an MCP to facilitate corporate ordering from other chatbots. The broader landscape of agent-based ordering remains varied, with some websites blocking access for personal agents, while Walmart has reportedly positioned itself to attract business from competitors by welcoming them.
